This is Ellesmere
Nestling between the Mere and the Canal our little Market Town, flower filled in Summer, has a wide variety of shops to interest the visitor. Many are family owned for several generations; our butchers' shops are traditional, browse around the antique shops, call in the fashion shops; the gift shops have something to tempt everyone with their variety; the newsagents have a wide range of daily and weekly local and national newspapers and magazines, together with books of local interest. The shop keepers are renowned for the friendly and personal attention they give to their customers.
At the centre of the town is The Square which is dominated by the Old Town Hall. This building with its pedimented roof was built by the Countess of Bridgewater in 1833. Underneath are fine brick vaulted cellars now transformed into a restaurant. The Ellesmere Hotel, formerly the Bridgewater Arms Hotel, commemorates the connection of Ellesmere with the Duke of Bridgewater, to whom it owes its canal.
Each Tuesday a market is held in the Market Hall. The town has held markets continuously since 1221.
