Origins of the Meres
The word 'mere' is an old Anglo Saxon word for lake although unlike lakes they do not have streams flowing in or out. They receive their water from the slow drainage of the surrounding soils and this nutrient rich water encourages a great variety of animal and plant life. The meres are unique in the country and a rarity in global terms.
Visit the Meres Visitor Centre and find out more about the formation of the meres and the great variety of animal and plant life.
In the Cremorne Gardens you will find a children's playground and a lovely woodland walk.
Boat trips on the mere are available from the site of the Meres Visitor Centre. You can watch the Herons nesting from the special window in the Meres Visitor Centre between March and May. The Kiosk will supply you with feed for the birds. Why not picnic on the Promenade or on Castlefields and enjoy lovely views of the mere - take a walk from Castlefields, over the stile into Sandy Lane, down St. John's Hill into town and sample the delights of the shops in our little Market Town.
