Things to see in and around Ellesmere
Colemere Country Park offers extensive walks and picnic areas.
Mere side - and of course 'The Mere' by the side of the town. Enjoy a stroll along the mere side and see the many varieties of wild birds which make the Mere their home.
Meres Visitor Centre - Containing a wealth of information for the naturalist on the local meres, bird watching and other local interests. This is a good vantage point to see the large Heron nesting site. Ellesmere Heronwatch. Or pop into the InfoLink in Wharf Road or the Library for more information about the town.
Cremorne Gardens - The beautiful park besides the Mere, with its children's play area. During the summer you can take boat trips on the Mere motor launches.
The Llangollen Canal - this branch of the canal system passes by Ellesmere and comes close to the town centre at the Wharf. The Wharf area is currently the subject of proposals to create a vibrant new development area. The historic canal system gave rise to the city of Ellesmere Port which took its name from our town. Blackwater Meadow Marina is situated just a few minutes walk from the facilities of Ellesmere.

Fishing - coarse fishing in the canal and local Meres. Details from the InfoLink (01691 624488) on Wharf Road or the Visitors Centre by the Mere (01691 622981).
Walking - Follow the Meres trail or the shorter Cremorne Gardens nature trail. Guides available at local newsagents and Meres Visitor Centre.
Cycling - Regional Cycle Route 31 runs from Oswestry through Ellesmere to Whitchurch. This is a 28 mile signed route along quiet, picturesque lanes. Shropshire County Council produce a free leaflet which can be obtained from transport@shropshire-cc.gov.uk or by calling Andrew Newlove on 01743 253035. Residents at the Red Lion Coaching Inn near St. Mary's Church may borrow bikes during their stay to explore the area.
