One of Ellesmere's secrets

Ellesmere Bowling Club at the top of Castle Hill (the highest point in the town) on the site of the old wooden fort. One of the oldest if not the oldest Bowling Green in the country still being used for crown green bowling. As well as its situation it has a number of things that are unique, unlike most greens it is circular and the person in charge is The Mayor of The Green.

From the bowling green there are quite wonderful views in all directions, the hills at Beeston and Helsby and Ellesmere Port can be seen to the north; to the west Wrexham, Llangollen, Chirk and the Cambrian Mountains; to the south Welshpool, and Rodney's Pillar. Ellesmere Bowling Club caters for all age groups from juniors to very senior: female and male, expert and novice are made welcome.

The club has over 100 members and plays in Whitchurch, Oswestry, and Wrexham leagues. Anyone interested in having a try at crown green bowling, joining the club or taking in the views and inspecting the facilities will be welcome at what has been described as "The nearest thing to heaven in North Shropshire" at the open day on Sunday 26th April 2009 from 1o'clock.
