The Oteley Estate is situated on the shores of the mere in Ellesmere. The estate has been in the family for over 500 years and has seen many changes from lavish country house to army hospital camp. In recent years however the 2,000 acres of land has become home to two stunning herds of native breeds of british cattle; Beef Shorthorn and Highland.
Here at Oteley, we believe happy, healthy animals produce the best meat, and our meat boxes are testament to that, with a delicious selection of quality meat also available in many of the Ellesmere Town Stores. Our Highlands our purely grass-fed, and are free to roam the lush pasture all year round.
We are advocates of extensive farming, not intensive, keeping the environment’s best interests at heart. Through being purely grass fed and not relying on cereals and grains to be grown for their consumption, they help to protect natural ecosystems and wildlife habitat.
There are minimal food miles with our beef. These animals are born here, they stay here, and then they are sold directly to customers and local shops

Events and Open Garden
On the shores of the Mere at Ellesmere is the beautiful location of Oteley Garden. Accessed via the rolling parkland and through the original Stable Yard, the 10 acre garden is home to an array of fantastic trees, shrubs and extensive lawn. Within the garden are many features from the original house including a boathouse, tower and swiss cottage. The garden is one of a handful of gardens that first opened in 1927 when the National Garden Scheme was launched and has continued to open once a year to raise money for nursing charities ever since. Rodney Stokes established the butchers in Ellesmere over 25 years ago, before converting farm buildings at Mereside Farm into a manufacturing unit and expanding the business by creating a range of gourmet pork pies.
It’s all in the mix !
We make our pies in small batches of no more than 25 ensuring attention to detail and quality control – all the ingredients are freshly weighed for every batch.
Our special recipe filling is mixed by hand, as is the hot water pastry which is made with just flour, lard, margarine and a little salt mixed with hot water. Just how you’d make it at home.
Hand stamped and sealed.
Using traditional equipment operated by hand the original ‘Little Champion’ pie stamper is used to press individual tins with the pastry. Pastry lids are stamped on to the pies and egg washed.
